According to UNICEF, Children of Mbeya demographics, (2021) Mbeya region has about 17% of under-five year’s children who require nursery school enrollment; by 2021 the total children population was 2,274,436. In education sector, 75.8% national average gross ratio of children enrolled in preprimary education. The net children national enrollment ratio in preprimary schools is 35.9%. On the national average primary school gross enrollment ratio is 110.6%, while 95.7% is primary school net national enrollment average ratio. There is only 75.5% primary school gross average national completion rate. On the other hand, there is 38.7% national average of standard III children meeting reading comprehension benchmark and the national average of pupil-teacher ratio in preprimary school is 1:192 pupils
General challenges that are faced by nursery and primary school pupils include distance to and from schools, absence of transport facilities for pupils, lack of dietary meals, presence of unqualified teachers, limited teaching and learning guides like books and computers. Also poor children upbringing has effects on his/her well-being including dropping out of school especially at primary school level
Good Hope Academy (GHA) background
Good Hope Academy is an English Medium nursery school established in July 2016 located at Block T area adjacent to Teofilo Kisanji University (TEKU) and begun with one teacher, a cooker and six pupils. The school has been responding to the challenges mentioned facing many nursery schools by provision of quality education from qualified and experienced teachers, with sports and games facilities, up to date academic materials like books, transport facilities having cars to carry pupils to and from home and good children upbringing
Since being in operation, the school attained tremendous success by partnership built in the whole school team such as school board, committed teachers and non-teaching staff, government and other partners. Among the success reached is four phases of all around 200 pupils graduated entered standard one, presence of enough staff who meets current school needs (5 teachers, 2 drivers, 2 cookers and 2 non-teaching staff) by 2024
The founder of Good Hope Academy (GHA) is Mrs. Dorice Mwambagi known as Mammy Yaya (due to her endless love for children) and during school launch there was one teacher and one pupil, the number of pupils raised slowly to six, up to date the school has 46 female and 41 male pupils taking children aged 2 to 6 years as a day scholars. Currently the school has 5 teaching staff and 6 non-teaching staff to ensure the pupils get standard education while ensured their safety in and out of school

GHA has a five years strategic plan 2024-2029 that has five objectives and strategies to achieve them with expectation to attain growth that will transform the recent progress to the highest level of operations in infrastructural development, improvement of teaching and learning, increased school financial status, ensure child progression in and out of school and increased partnership among stakeholders among others

The school will broaden its service delivery to every area of its operation to meet required standards of the best school. It will cover areas like transportation facilities, school library and hiring of having highly qualified teachers
2. School evolution from nursery to pre and primary school
The school will meet required pupils’ needs for both nursery and primary school through construction of a new and standard pre and primary school in a new selected compound. The purpose is to reduce pupil’s movement seeking for primary school service after completion of primary school education
3. Expansion of the schools’ strong financial base
In order to maintain its financial stability, Good Hope Academy will diversify its financial resource through practice of multidimensional income generation activities. It will engage professional experts for undertaking feasibility study of viable and sustainable income generation activities
4. Advocacy of children’s rights in and out of the school
Children rights will be a school cross cutting agenda by all partners to agree and sign consent to promote child rights in every area of their operation. In order to attain child friendly working environment, child rights will be the main agenda in every GHA activity like board meeting, parents meeting and all the school management activities
5. Promote successful pupils’ transition in their education
School administration will make sure every pupil completed at GHA is going to the next level of education which is primary school and once GHA pre and primary school begun; linkage to both primary and secondary school is done

Children who came with o ability to read or write, after short duration of joining GHA have cached easy and being able to read and write.
